Living the Good Life, Episode 155 (May 16-22, 2021): A giant’s left us…

Was having an excellent week, but on Wednesday I and pretty much the entire world got a MASSIVE shot of bad news. The lowdown:

Sunday:

EPIC Day! A+++! First the weather was wonderful–warm, blue sky with puffy white clouds, a perfect summer day. Went out to Santora’s and enjoyed myself, but when I got home…w00t! Finished up the VERY LAST EP OF METAL ARMOR DRAGONAR! We are DONE, bros!

Monday:

Another EPIC day, A+++! Went to the doctor’s for a checkup and was all fine, went to Wendy’s for a repast, then got home and worked on RELEASING DRAGONAR! What an awesome day. 09/17/2013-05/17/2021: How long we spent working on Dragonar. Hoooh…

Tuesday:

Just relaxed. Went out to my beloved Little Lamb Hot Pot, decided I didn’t need a new compy thing, and watched ep 7 of Megalo Box 2, the goodness just keeps coming. Joe’s back in town, and Liu’s still training with Yuri–he’s miffed that Joe didn’t fight at his top ability (the man Yuri fought wasn’t the same man that Liu fought). So he confronts Joe, and Joe agrees to spar with him, and manages to win this time–while his lil’ orphan friends watch the show and insist he’s making a comeback. Meanwhile, Yukiko (from the first season) is still around and helping a new guy with a revolutionary new robotics system that can repair brain and nerve damage called BES, and the tester for this system is a guy named Mac, who was hurt saving people in a fire, paralyzed, but regained his ability to walk thanks to a BES nerve implant. Mac has since gotten into Megalo Box and is Liu’s opponent in the upcoming Megalovania…and he also seems to have some relationship with Joe. Neato, like I said I am loving this. Every bit of Megalo Box 2 seems to have something speaking for it, whether it’s the subtle treatment of contemporary issues like the refugee crisis for the first 5 eps, or the path it seems to be on now, which seems to be men working through the emotions, motives, and pasts, without any acrimony towards each other or even a real good guy/bad guy sports conflict (both Liu and Mac seem to be good people and they have a lot of respect for each other).

After that, I just stayed home and played some VA-11 Hall-A. So yeah, this day wasn’t as epic as the previous two, but a solid A nonetheless 😀

Wednesday

I’ve had better days, but worse days too. Went out to Denny’s and bought a nose hair trimmer at Wal-Mart, both of which took more time than I’d hoped, but not too much. Then I just went home and played more VA-11 Hall-A.

Then, later at night, I got some real awful news.

Kentaro Miura, author of Berserk, had passed away earlier this month.

Can’t say much more than that. But awful, awful news.

Thursday

After composing myself a bit, I managed to write up an entry about what Berserk has meant to me, in honor of Miura:

Thank you, Professor Miura

Aside from that, I tried to keep things normal. Berserk, after all, is all about striding forward even in the midst of adversity, and Miura himself wouldn’t have wanted us to be so broken up over his death we forgot about our own lives. So even though I’ll be a little somber for a little while, I’ll try to keep my routine. Went to Denny’s and had their fried chicken with rice, hashbrowns, and a bit of bread, then went home to read the next ep of Kaiju n. 8…

Mmm, it was a pretty tense chapter, but I’m not sure if it’s still as original as it was at the beginning. The members of the 3rd Division are getting sent out to other ones as preparation for a large-scale monster offensive, which seems likely. Meanwhile, Commander Shinomiya insults and berates his daughter for having faith in Kafka, saying monsters like him killed her mother, and shows an X-ray proving that Kafka no longer has a heart, but a Kaiju core. He then meets with Kafka himself, wearing his defense force suit–I guess authority equals asskicking in this outfit. He shoots Kafka with a pistol after freeing him from his restraint chair, which Kafka blocks with his transformed fists, and the Commander tells Kafka no human could ever do that. Then, too fast even for Kafka, Shinomiya Sr. grabs his chest and rips out a chunk of flesh as a sample. Ugh…I guess the higher-ups won’t be reasonable about this after all, which is a shame, we’ve seen this plotline before. Ah, well…

FRIDAY:

Chatting with friends on both the Bloodstained and Berserk discord made me feel a little better. I didn’t go out to eat today, but I did clean up my room a little. Also spent some time working on stuff…

SATURDAY:

Went out to Denny’s and then watched episode 9 of vivy. It seems like Antonio, Ophelia’s old partner, overwrote her personality and faked his own death because he thought she wasn’t up to the task of being a performer. Meanwhile, it seems like the guy who captured Vivy has been waiting to see her again for 40 years, and is himself an android! Or maybe a cyborg. He is the terrorist guy from previous episodes, and gives the reasoning for his actions–his piano teacher was an android, but died trying to save people in an accident, and the terrorist was infuriated at the seeming inconsistency of holding a funeral for someone who wasn’t “real.” He questioned why AIs were even built if that was the reasoning, and swore to destroy all AIs because of it. Weird reasoning, but whatever. He does something to vivy, trying to bring back her old personality, and says meeting her changed his outlook on ais, and he captured her just to meet her again. Matsumoto manages to send a drone to vivy in time to rescue her, but his main body is fighting with Antonio, who also seems to be working with the terrorist guy, Kakitani. Vivy and Matsumoto both manage to defeat Kakitani and Matsumoto, but Ophelia ends up damaged during the fight, and Kakitani’s body is destroyed too. Before he dies, he tells Vivy that his android body into which he put his consciousness is too advanced for the world, and he received it following a “vision”…I wonder if there was another AI sent back along with matsumoto but for the machines, terminator 2 style. Vivy manages to give one last song as her “Diva” personality before Kakitani’s virus destroys her, leaving only the old Vivy…

I thought this ep was a little confusing–like I said, Kakitani’s motivations seem kind of obscure. But the action was really really good. Only 4 more eps, guess we’ll see what’s up…

THINGS I HAD TO FINISH THIS WEEK:

Computer Repair – I figured it wouldn’t be worth it, though I’m sentimentally attached to that old machine, I’ll just replace it with a cheap laptop when it becomes unusable, and it hasn’t gotten that far yet. I consider this DONE!

Donating Blood – Didn’t do it this week because I gave blood to be tested during my checkup, but next week should be good~

Clean up my room – DONE

THINGS I HAVE TO DO NEXT WEEK

Give blood – set up an appointment for Thursday

The longer entry about Miura’s impact on me I described above.

Well, after this, hopefully next week lifts the funk hearing of Miura’s passing put me in. But before that, something new…

BUCKET LIST PROGRESS

Sorry if this seems morbid, but with Miura’s passing this week, I feel pretty morbid. So I’m going to list all the stuff I want to do before death takes me, as it eventually will.

1: Read the end of Berserk. At least I got to see Guts get off the boat, so that’s good enough. – With Miura-sensei’s passing, I have to consider Guts leaving the boat to be good enough. Done…

2: Read the end of Girl Genius. At least I got to see Lucrezia kicked out of Agatha’s mind, so that’s something.

3: Finish up with Dragonar – YES! That’s DONE!

4: Publish my big project! This was The Unnecessary Science, so that’s DONE.

5: Play Front Mission 5.

6: Play Brigandine: Grand Edition. I think I’ll work on these emulation related things when I get a new computer–a new deskie, I mean.

7: Finish up a second big project…

8: Maybe finish up a 3rd big project related to Berserk.

9: Finish a FOURTH big project I’ve had thoughts about for a while. Won’t say much more about it other than it involves VNs.

10: Donate maybe 100 dollars to a good charity I ought to find…

11: *maybe* finish up a fic I’ve always wanted to put out. But this is really extra.

12: Maybe do something with Wayward Son I’ve wanted to do for a while, but also extra.

13: Maybe write one last long manosphere essay.

14: Obviously, get all my affairs in order–will, etc.

15: Finish up some other tasks Starseeker might have for me now that I owe it to her for Dragonar…

16: Maybe a couple smaller essays on other topics.

a: Critique of a blog article

b: Berserk analysis 1

17: Maybe clear up some of the drafts I have in my drafts folder…
