Gunlord’s College Saga, Episode 22 (March 15, 2020): CORONAPOCALYPSE 2020

Hmm…things might not be as dire as they were last week. This week was pretty nice!

…at least it was until Wednesday, when shit started to get real–not academically, but in the real world D: The lowdown:

WORKIN:

Monday: Did OK on the math quiz; lost a couple points on the homework, possibly, but no biggie. I gotta buckle down and get more progress done on my compsci project, though, and I got a lot of studying to do for math! Argh…

Tuesday: Stayed home and studied.

Wednesday: Arrrgh! Did poorly on the last math quiz cause of dumb mistakes! Did better on today’s, though, at least I think so. Also got a couple of points off on the compsci quiz due to a dumb mistake, but not too many so it’s alright. However, things might be getting interesting soon…

ALL MY COURSES ARE GOING ONLINE!!!!!

Yeah, the coronapocalypse has hit my state pretty hard, so my uni says we’re moving to online courses as much as possible. Next week is spring break anyways, but after that, THEN things are gonna get interesting. We’ll see how it goes. In good news, though, I handed in the first part of my first project, a day before it was due, too! Not bad 😎

Thursday: Stayed home and played a new game, Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth! Really good!

Friday: Went and finished a lab–the last in person one of the semester–and then played Stela all night long!

Saturday: Played a bit of Age of Empires, then studied a bit of math and compsci.

Sunday: More studying, thats it 😦

Things I Had To Finish This Week:

Meet with an advisor about changing my major to a B.A.

Miscellaneous Goals:

Meet with the advisor.

Things to Do Next Week:

Nothing, even aside from the coronavirus it’d be spring break.

FUN STUFF:

EATAN:

With the virus, I won’t be able to eat out as much anymore–I prolly shoulda stopped earlier, but I hadn’t thought the virus reached my place yet. After Thursday I stopped eating out entirely. Now, I had some nice things earlier in the week, before the situation got really bad, but at this point I don’t think I should post anything, as I don’t want to encourage going out (even though I did so before the state of emergency was declared). So nothin this week, or for the foreseeable future 😦

TIMAN:

Not good…this coronavirus stuff has REALLY messed up our schedule. Starstar’s had to move over to working from home and she’s had to spend a lot of time getting things set up, so that

WATCHAN:

Nothin.

PLAYAN:

Got Langrisser II on Steam, but I havent played it…I LOVED Der Langrisser, which was the remake of 2 on the snes, but the steam version doesnt appeal to me as much cause it doesn’t have Urushihara’s art and I really dislike the chibi units–they remind me too much of the mobile Fire Emblem Heroes game, it kinda seems lazy. But I bought it anyways to show my support for Langrisser in the US, so Im not too unhappy about spending the money.

I also played the early acces version (pretty much a demo) of Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, a record of Lodoss War game from Team Ladybug! It’s just the first two bosses so I won’t do a full review yet, but so far I REALLY liked it. Check me out!

I also got Stela on a whim and…enjoyed it a surprising amount. It kept me occupied for the 2 hours it took me to beat it. The conceit is that…well, it’s one of those “minimal narrative” games. It’s a pretty standard puzzle-platformer, there’s no combat and you have to avoid enemies, but essentially, it seems like there’s been an apocalypse or something with mutated humans and all that in a fantasy world with magic, and you have to guide a young woman through all these dangers by jumping over pits, grabbing boxes to climb to reach new areas, and so on. The music is supposed to tell you of approaching danger, and it does a surprisingly good job of that, and the aesthetics are similar to the PS3 game Journey, and it also shares the theme of being pretty vague and minimalistic in terms of narrative (no dialogue whatsoever, you’re only given hints on what’s going on and where you’re going, the ending is also supposed to be “emotional” and so on).

Now, another steam reviewer mentioned that this game is very, very similar to Inside, another puzzle-platformer released a while ago. I haven’t played that game so I can’t speak to that, though if the reviewer’s accusation is true I’d take a few points off for lack of originality. Even beyond that, though…I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but I really do feel like I’ve played this game before. The ‘minimalistic narrative’ thing has been played through so many times ever since Shadow of the Colossus. And while the game looks nice, and the puzzles are inventive and engaging without being too difficult, even after 2 hours I was starting to feel a little bored. Like I said, maybe it’s just me and having played so many of these sorts of games before, but on the other hand, the game does cost 20 bucks (albeit it’s 16 bucks with a sale right now), and that’s arguably way too much money for only 2 hours of gameplay. However, there are some secrets and stuff I didn’t get in my playthrough, and finding those might extend the game’s life considerably.

Despite these caveats, why would I recommend this game? Well, the graphics, and more than that, the aesthetic direction–the architecture of the world, the level design, and so on–bespeak a great deal of effort put into the game, and the music really is very good. So even though the price is very steep for 2 hours, I’m willing to pay it to show my support for their hard work. But other players might not be so generous, so if you’re one of them, keep that in mind for this review.

READAN:

Just busting my butt studying.

WRITAN:

As above.

Next week I’ll be mostly locked at home, though I haven’t stocked up too much…I may have to do some supply runs, hopefully the risk won’t be too high. Wish me luck…
